They are called superplasticizers and they can help the concrete cure harder as well. This is due to the increased density and reduced shrinkage. The concrete manufacturers don't really explain that to home owners that grab pre mix concrete from the store and just use water alone. 3 quarts of water is the optimal amount of water for the strongest concrete but it is not workable. I know a curbing company that makes a powdered product called Curb Gravy that does this. You should try it on your next project.
