lol I've painted wood with used motor oil clear back to when it was called burnt crankcase oil. You mentioned not having the money to buy stain. We never had the moolah to buy perfectly good diesel to mix with used oil to paint on a fence! Never even thought of it and wouldn't even have tried it if we had. We just used the engine squeezings straight.

my Uncle did this to his fence in the 60s and the fence is still there , I think he did it with a brush , but I'm going to do it with a roller I think , on my 6' privacy fence
Is there any accelerated fire hazard concerns using this method? 🤔
kersene would be any better..as for unfriendly to the environment.that is negligeble,,,almost non existent..since it DOES DRY…there is no runoff into streams…

In addition to it all leaching into the soil and contaminating everything around it, it's also turning the whole thing into a giant tinder box. This was the Old Timer's secret to staining log cabins and cedar siding as well. Looks great until it catches fire and burns the whole house down in less than ten minutes. They stopped doing this once they realized it was as dumb as the idiot in Parachute, CO who built his fireplace and chimney out of oil shale. It's also illegal. It violates EPA laws, as well as fire codes.
This shouldn’t be any more harmful than all the trash cities gather and dump in landfills then cover with dirt and have seagulls eat from
Rubbish old oil is black mix it with diesel and it will still be black spray it on your fence your fence will turn black
